ampath mexico
In August 2020, I became the Director for Research and Education for AMPATH Mexico. This is an exciting initiative out of Dell Medical School’s Division of Global Health aiming to transform healthcare in economically poor, marginalized communities in the state of Puebla, Mexico, especially rural communities. We began with an extensive health needs and resources assessment in four communities in the summer of 2019, covering medical conditions, mental health, and access to care. We also explored dwelling construction and quality of air and water with the help of medical students from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP). Puebla is Mexico’s 5th poorest state and the results of the needs assessment were sobering. This project was the foundation for the ongoing project, AMPATH Mexico, a collaboration between the University of Texas and BUAP.
